With a user base impossible to estimate, and some say over 200,000,000 websites in WordPress, it is time to take the worlds most widely used open source software seriously. Sometimes the public only hears what it pays somebody to tell them, and open-source is free. Then there are renegades like me, and my team. In 2001 my free-ads sites looked a lot like WordPress does now: I paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for custom php code which was barely usable compared to the totally free WordPress, WordPress Multi-site (WPMU), and Buddy Press as seen at upLog.org.
